Title: LIST with best recommended notebooks@workstations for Lumion
Post by: Member54439 on July 02, 2012, 11:30:33 am
Hello,

I've been charged with the task of choosing a rig FOR RT presentations in Lumion.
The models we build are quite big so a powerful and silent GFXcard powered notebook (or workstation) are welcome. We work now on 2008 Macpro with Quadro 4000 1Gb VRAM but these are already a bit outdated and my models are perhaps too complex as some parts sometimes disappear (the water for instance tends to disappear suddenly, or big long triangles appear from the ground towards the zenith of the skydome, etc.). I also use a late 2011 Macbbokpro but I guess it will be useless for models of this size...
Therefore, it could be very handy to present us a constantly updated list of recommended configs for us lumionauts, perhaps as a sticky here on the forum...?
Thanks in advance,

Hi quickit, there are a few threads regarding the most suitable laptops for Lumion but we haven't got an official sticky post as laptops are pretty much already outdated as soon as you place an order these days :)

Here's some advice in a 6 month old thread:

Has anyone ever ordered a laptop from Sager? The specs look rather impressive...

re Sager; wow on price but thats the lowest of the base product yet to be customized, add $495 for starters for the 680M over the 670M.

Says the 680M is 4GB, but NVIDIA site shows 680M's as only having 2GB so the other 2GB must be via Optimus so no good for Lumion.

From the bits I look at still seems for laptops that the Radeon does well better including price if go to the 7970M, but looks like the 680M is catching up or better as looks like 3DMark is over the 5000 compared to Radeon7970M of 3946 (not sure if they are same benchmark measures), so anything less than the 680M in GeForce is not worth it.

Is there anybody working on Alienware Top of the line?
Say, the M17x-8826 for instance?
Intel Core i7-3720QM 16 Go 1 To + SSD 64 Go 17.3" LED AMD Radeon HD 7970M Blu-ray player /DVD-RW Wi-Fi N/BT Webcam Windows 7 Premium 64 bits
Seems a good start...?
According to Passmark, the HD 7970M is 6th now, all categories mixed.

Hmm, I'm beginning to wonder if we should use a different benchmark system.

Seeing the 7970M so close to the GTX 580 on the Passmark site does not make sense.

If you look them up on 3DMark.com, the fastest system with a 7970M gets around 12,000 3DMark 11 points whereas the fastest system with a GTX 580 gets almost 28,000 points...
