Title: Does waterspray effects "fall forever"??
Post by: Member2609 on May 26, 2012, 12:22:31 am
Trying to make a pool with extra features, like massage jets, current, etc.

Its kinda hard to make these features in Lumion, I was finally able to simulate the bubble turbidity from horizontal water jets coming from the bottom of the pool, by making a circle with a different material, right above the jets, at the top of the water surface, then using a 2nd water material (with more ripples) at this circle.

Then I added a waterspray effect right in the center of the circle... low angle, and small size. It gets perfect.

But to my dismay, I noticed that when going underwater (and yes, I want to go underwater in the videos), the waterspray continues falling down through the water surface, as if it didnt exist.

Then I added a 2nd surface in the model, right under it, in the hope that if I set it to a solid paint material or glass (which doesnt appear underwater), the waterspray would stop at it.

Again to my dismay, it seems the waterspray continued through it as if the surface did not exist.

I was wondering if there is someway to "stop" a waterspray in some level, instead of it falling forever.

What if I want to have a fountain at the top of a building? Will the waterspray fall right through all the building floors as if they did not exist?

ah, never mind... when putting the waterspray above the water, I noticed it stops falling eventually, but still, it falls too much after the source of origin to be usable as an above water effect...

I'd love to see an image of your project.

so far I have not started the project on Lumion yet, exactly because I first wanted to know if it was POSSIBLE to do what I wanted in Lumion. Since my waterspray solution failed because it falls below the waterline, I think I will have to tell the client that what he wants cant be done as a movie, only as a static image (probably on VRAY, where I can use static bitmaps to simulate the waves, bubbles, and also add PNG images with opacity map simulating water jet turbulence)

In regard waterspray below waterline, have you tried use of layers?

It may work depending on need for views but if the waterspray effect is on a layer then it can be hidden in another clip when the camera is below water line.

Rough example in attached video.

thats a good idea... I will see what can be done...

well, I tried it... it works, ok, but its sad that from UNDERWATER, the effects disappear and it looks like nothing is happening...

You're right, certain objects/materials/effects that rely on transparency are generally not rendered behind other transparent objects/materials/effects. The developers are aware of this limitation but it is apparently very difficult to change this.

I see... too bad.

either way, a lot can be done with the waterspray effect, but it really could use two more parameters:

- maximum fall distance (thus we can turn the fountein on its side and have a big water jet, and still, the water not falling through solid materials (in this case, we manually set how far it will fall, no need to physics calculation)

- some sort of gravity control... so the water can fall sideways or upward... (thus in underwater scenes, the jets can behave more realistically...)
