Title: saving files and a complete a summary of the content of the Ultimate edition
Post by: Member14804 on January 21, 2012, 04:34:38 pm
Hi

I'm just started playing around with the free edition of Lumion, and find the concept very pleasant.

I can create some quite nice illustrations in a very short time (compared to vray), by using Sketchup and Lumion. Next I have to try Revit / Lumion.

Before I go any further and investing in the Ultimate edition, I have some questions:

Is it possible for coworkers to use one license on several workstation (obvious not at the same time)?

It seems to me, that not being able to select the folder for saving files (newer seen that in a program before), complicates teamwork. Is the any plans for making saving more flexible ? or is there a specific reason for this limitation?

Is it possible to se a complete list of objects that is included in the Ultimate package? 1500 euro is quite a lot of money and I would like to see, for instance, all the trees. I live in denmark, and therefore palmtrees are not that usefull :-)

Is there any autumn trees in the package?

Is it possible for one to extend the object database by myself?

Thanks and keep up the good work.
Looking foreword to the updated free version :-)

I can create some quite nice illustrations in a very short time (compared to vray), by using Sketchup and Lumion. Next I have to try Revit / Lumion.
- there's a new Revit exporter to create a Collada file for Lumion and is working well for those so far using/testing work with Revit.  This is only available at moment for V2 licensed users as a separate installer.
 - v2 also includes support now for DWG & DFX
 - alerntatively, the workflow would be Revit to FBX, then either to Lumion or intermediate to say Max (or SkUp) for finalising then Collada/FBX to Lumion

Before I go any further and investing in the Ultimate edition, I have some questions:

 - you can invest in the Basic version and add in as needed one or more of the plug-ins and progress up to Ultimate depending on budgets and needs, but Ultimate of course gives everything plus access to some additionals and in my view is where one should target purchasing as it gives maximum bang for buck and you're up and going with everything straight away.

Is it possible for coworkers to use one license on several workstation (obvious not at the same time)?

 - possible; yes, practical; perhaps, fair? depends on what usage is being made, you can Activate/De-activate a license, but that's really intended to help someone work at office then at home without need for extra license; there's details in the Lumion web site about that activation process if you need a little more insight plus search of forum.

It seems to me, that not being able to select the folder for saving files (newer seen that in a program before), complicates teamwork. Is the any plans for making saving more flexible ? or is there a specific reason for this limitation?

 - let Morten or Lumion dev team respond to that

Is it possible to se a complete list of objects that is included in the Ultimate package? 1500 euro is quite a lot of money and I would like to see, for instance, all the trees. I live in denmark, and therefore palmtrees are not that usefull :-)

 - see Remkos post and the link to the Picasa images (http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=2558.0), plus other users have compiled some picks as well but Remko's pics are probably most comprehensive

Is there any autumn trees in the package?

 - there are maybe half-dozen or so, you will see in the screen caps
 - they are continually adding more objects, and users are ever expanding their wish list
 - you can also import your own, they just won't be optmised for Lumion for real-time display or have LOD (but fine for render) or wind motion but would still be suitable for any of your scenes, one tree of course can be anything to 100k poly so should be reduced first for realtime so if you wanted 10 in a scene it would soon start impacting

Is it possible for one to extend the object database by myself?

 - yes, you generally do that through your own Import Library rather than to the Lumion Librarys

This wokflow also very interesting. Do you know if auto-update feature still work if I working with 3 softwares like:

Revit ---> 3DS Max -> Lumion
SketchUp---> 3DS Max -> Lumion

Revit/SketchUp file linking to 3DS Max work quite well. Now if I update model in Revit/SketchUp, do additional work in 3DS Max and overwrite .fbx/collada, then update the Lumion. Would my previous Lumion textures and settings still work fine?

I may use Revit/SketchUp for main architectural works/Documentations.
And 3DS Max for addition environments, plugins and V-Ray renderings.
Add/replace some parts with animated plants,cars,people and birds in Lumion for animations.
Revit/SketchUp model may need update frequently, 3DS Max environments will slowly buit up as we go.

Or could we linked/updated multiple files from softwares to one Lumion file ?

Revit -----------------
                             |
3DS Max -- ---> Lumion
                             |
SketchUp-------------

Thanks,
Ming

- there is no auto-update feature in Lumion.  You update when and if you choose by clicking on the Update button in the Materials assignment screen, so you can work with many softwares as needed.

Now if I update model in Revit/SketchUp, do additional work in 3DS Max and overwrite .fbx/collada, then update the Lumion. Would my previous Lumion textures and settings still work fine?

 - Of course, in general yes.  But it does depend on what you have done in your source/DCC files, surely. If you have assigned a new material to an existing mesh in the DCC for example then that surface no longer uses the old material so Lumion would and should not try to keep using a Lumion material you have assigned.

Or could we linked/updated multiple files from softwares to one Lumion file ?

Revit -----------------
                             |
3DS Max -- ---> Lumion
                             |
SketchUp-------------

 - Lumion does not limit the number, so you can have as many (within reason) source export files as you need coming from any type of DCC that exports appropriately to Collada/FBX etc that Lumion supports as an import format type.

So as you have (and it could be typical in some arch environments/projects) multiple DCC's providing content to Lumion.  All depends on what's needed, how the objects are being built and how the core/main scene in a DCC is to be brought together.

Peterm,

Thanks for your informative reply. We're waiting for Lumion 2 free to do some serious evaluation for our company. I believe we will find something which really impact our workflow in a good way.

Smooth collaborations between softwares will change our workflow a lot, so our workflow can be very flexibles. I hope we can integrated final presentation works from different professionals in Lumion, which look like the software that everyone in the team can learn easily.

Thanks,
Ming

Hej Jørgensen, the reason is lack of time and our customers' insatiable appetite for new features throughout 2011 :)

In 2012, the developers will focus on improving some of the existing features though, and they have previously mentioned that they would like to make Lumion projects more portable, so let's hope this will become a priority soon. For the time being you will have to copy the Scene and Library folders manually from one PC to another. There's more information at the bottom of this thread:

Lumion 2 Ultimate ships with over 1300 models, and as Peter mentioned, we tend to expand this collection in both minor and major updates. Here's a post with thumbnails of the models:

Hi morten

Thanks for your input (and others)

I just made the jump and invested in the ultimate edition :-) YES

An option to save files, for example in desktop/dropbox would be great :-)

Great to hear that - make yourself at home :)

Although it may seem like a significant initial sum for a small architectural practice, you'll be getting free upgrades until late 2012, and I hope you'll begin to see a return on your investment over the coming months.

Forum support is obviously also included, so give us a shout if you need a hand or if you get stuck.

P.S. If you're Bo R, did you study at the Aarhus School of Architecture by any chance?

I thought I recognised your name (although I don't think we ever met though)... I'm a graduate of 2001 - it's a small world, eh!?

Anyway, welcome once again - I hope you'll enjoy Lumion 2 Ultimate!

We'll have a new version ready for release soon (hopefully this week) - it includes a number of bug fixes and some improvements.
