Title: start lumion in theatre mode with loaded project
Post by: Member877 on December 04, 2011, 04:35:33 pm
as for now there will be no executable lumion viewer i thought about this a lot the last days ...

would it be possible to start lumion in theatre mode loading a particular project ?

this really important (to us) customer really wants to have the realtime model of their main industrial complex. ( and there are three more we could make realtime 3D in the future )
I dont want them to be able to render images and movies on their own. (thats what we are doing for them and we want it to stay this way in the future  :-D)

So i am thinking to buy another liscense for this particular customer.

if i deliver all project and scene files to the computer of this customer, would it be possible to write a batch-file for starting this project in lumion in theatremode and if possible in fullscreen, too ?
If not could this be added to lumion ?

best regards
stucki

this would be very much appreciated and would help us a lot.

Hi Ingo, this question is for Ferry and Remko and they're busy working on Lumion 2 at the moment.

Hi Ingo, I know you are not going to like this reply, but I would advise against offering features that do not yet exist to your clients. I know this puts you in an awful situation since your project relies on this feature, but let me explain why.

If we confirmed that Feature X could be made at some point in the future (and you promised your clients this), we would both be in trouble if Feature X turned out to be impossible or very time-consuming to implement.

Programming software is unfortunately full of pitfalls, and even though the Theatre-style player that you're suggesting may seem like a simple modification, once you start to think about it, there's a bunch of things that you would need to take into consideration (The first thing that springs to mind is User Account permission problems in Windows when you try to run a batch-script (most security software will try to block .bat scripts), command flag for F9 (tree detail level), command flag for F8 (light shadows on/off), command flag for full screen, command flag for invert mouse, command flag for quality level and so on).

I am not saying that it is impossible to implement this, but there is unfortunately no way Ferry and Remko can commit to implementing this sort of functionality at the moment.

customer really wants to have the realtime model of their main industrial complex.

Would be interested to know a little of the real reasons why client wants the realtime model.

Perhaps you are not in a position with them to ask or walkthrough the issues of them doing so, but their need to have may not be really justifiable, by that I mean simply perhaps they just want to play.  I appreciate they are the client and what the client wants...etc.

If they want to iterate through various design decisions then perhaps you will be able to offer a better option by including your added value service and expertise in design meetings such as walking through such options with them directly.

If they haven't got the time, resources or expertise to do what you have done for them in the first place, then perhaps they need to be challenged as to their reasons (appreciate thats not always even remotely possible with some clients).

the main purpous of the realtime model is to be able to make quick descisions for expanding and restructuring the complex.
they have about 10 people who are in command of making this descissions and so they can get together, we can load the various variants /or have them in layers and they can walk around and see the possibilities in realtime from every angle they want.

we already have done this for severyl years now in normal renderings for them and they are very pleased about it.
going realtime is the future for this kind of things, i think !
and the head of the company does like it very much !  :-D

Stucki, have you tried video conference type interaction where you share your screen and walk through all the interactive elements you need with you in command?

or a physical visit to the office to accomplish the same thing?

i have had much success in the past doing this and the client was much more comfortable with me guiding them as opposed to leaving it in their hands.

video conference
Robert, as the things are, this is the more guessed right thing that someone might have suggested.
I have followed with interest everything relating to feasible EXE and also I am sorry that we do not have it available already.
I believe that the designers of Lumion are leaving the skin him in the development of this second phase, and I think that for them also it is been a disappointment, necessary to have to relegate or to postpone the EXE question.
My great fear is that moving into the second phase, expected to find a team with a bigger staff Lumion and see continuing to fall the responsibility for designing, programming and improvements in Ferry and Remko, it worry to me. I hope that all the publicity has been given the program from the Competition, increase sales and licensing at some point we may see an executable Lumion with interactive change of materials and textures, and more like realtime IG, better 3d moving people, etc, etc.
Until then, I hope they know that have my full support and appreciation for the effort shows.
Greetings. Nicolas

thanks for the visoe conference suggestion. I will have to think about this.
but we are talking about a very complex model. and with everything on i get 14 frames per second on a gtx 580 3gb ram.
wouldnt video recording and streaming to the client reduce frame rate a lot ?

what program could be used for this purpose ?

Stucki,

We are doing SketchUp online training with a couple of screen sharing applications including Skype (which many Internet users have). I would also like to see how Lumion performances during such a session and if you have Skype (and are interested), we could try. If so, add gaieus (I am in Central European Time).

Great in theory, however ive tried to use skype a number of time to show models/cad for clients and its depends on a excellent internet connection or you just waste a load of time. even if you achieve a good connention the quality their end isnt great.
