Title: First project, help with material assignments (From SketchUP 8)
Post by: Member4156 on August 30, 2011, 04:15:11 am
I import the file into Lumion as the tutorial states but when I select the glass in the windows, a lot of geometry is selected instead of just the glass.  I should say that the file was originally built in REVIT and then brought in as a DWG file for further tweeking / material assigning.

Is there a trick to explode or something so that I can select individual things for materials?

Thank you so much.

James

Well first there is an issue with material selection in build 5. You will have to rotate the camera a bit when selecting materials once to update the selectable materials. If that doesn't work try flying close with the camera to your surface you wish to select.

Just to rule out other causes, could you check if a unique material was assigned to the glass sections in SketchUp prior to exporting the scene?

Which export format are you using in SketchUp? Collada (DAE) or FBX?

@ Ferry.  Thank you, but it doesn't seem to be affected by my camera position while hovering mouse over the area I am trying to select.

I did explode all windows / groups inside of SketchUP prior to exporting.  I exported .DAE file format and selected Triangulate as well as export double sided faces.  I also did assign a transparent material inside of SU to the glass.

I like the program, it has a lot of potential for scene renderings as long as the transfer from SU goes smoothly for materials that is.

Hi Kroke,

You are saying you exploded everything in SketchUp: good, group materials can easily fool Lumion.

Now also make sure you do not have any glass material assigned on back faces by any chance. There is a very good SU Plugin that can remove any back face material (beside a lot of other, cool features):

You only need backface materials when exporting single face objects (think of a flag or sail for instance)

Gaieus,

I'm not really that educated on double sided faces. Would it help to uncheck exporting double sided faces?  I don't think I have anything assigned on the back faces but I'm not entirely sure. :P

I'll check the plugin.  Thank you :)

If you could also post the file (or at least a portion that shows this), it would be helpful.

You don't mind looking at it for me?  Ok awesome.

I will attach the offending file.  Hopefully it is not a rookie mistake since it IS my first project :)

And the SketchUp file too please :)

Ah yes, sorry, I also meant the SU file as symptoms can be explored better there. The dae file does not include any textures (they export into a corresponding folder) so not too much can be said about it.

Also, if you want to post your Revit file or FBX file, we can import it into Max and export DAE with no problems with material assignments.

Oops sorry guys, I've been away for a time.  Here is the SU file.

Well, there are a bunch of single face entities there (like your walls do not have thickness and such) but this should not be the issue. To be honest, I have not found any problem with your file. I attached the dae file (with the corresponding material folder) zipped. See the screenshot also. I turned the SU glass material into Lumion glass and it is now selected: only the windows seem to be selected.

Sometimes with the way Lumion displays a selected material (re colour highlights all surfaces for material matched), it can look like the user has ended up selecting more or other surfaces than the just the ones they expected.

This may happen especially for floor level based material surfaces, or some walls depending on where viewing from.  Visually, it looks like it's including other objects surfaces as well, but only because its showing you the full extent of the surface areas.

As Gaieus mentioned, there's no problem with the SkUp and Collada files.
