Title: Show FPS also shows Verts
Post by: peterm on August 28, 2011, 05:37:15 am
Generally have had Show FPS setting turned off, so presume the display also of Verts is part of update for SP2 B7.

Wondering what the reasoning behind displaying number of vertices and not the number of polygons is.

The number of vertexes is what is costing steady speed. Each vertex will be processed by your 3d card but not all polygons result in a pixel so it depends more on how and which polygons you see.

I had a demo scene that was really slow and needed to know how many vertexes the scene was.

As you can see it already shows the vertexes of the landscape and the interface. If you press F4 and then F3 you can see that using shadows on the landscape doubles the vertexes rendered.

Speedtree is not counted.

Thanks Ferry.

As a slight aside, which is more costly for terrains, an imported bitmap map or a mesh imported of the terrain map, assuming both result in same size of w-h-d and have the same texture?

Depends on the size of course but generaly speaking a terrain mesh of 50.000 vertexes with a bmp of 2048x2048 will be much faster than a small bmp (256x256) and a terrain using 2.000.000 vertexes.
