Title: Multithreading
Post by: Member3759 on July 30, 2011, 12:57:34 am
Hi, everyone I´m new at Lumion and was wondering if anyone could tell me whether Lumion is Multithread capable? If so, can the fine people at Lumion (or any other kind soul) tell me how to enable that feature. Because my machine is only using one core ,out of eight, for rendering!!!
thanks in advance,

Mainly its single core.
You would not really much benifit of using all cores, because mainly most calculation are on the gpu.

It uses all your GPU cores for rendering. Your CPU cores can't help your GPU cores much.

I dont think there is any scene in Lumion where the cpu is the limiting factor. Lumion is multi core-ish in the sense that it use multiple cores where it can. I belive the mp4 compression is optimized for multiple cores for example.

Further to the original posters message, does the latest version of Lumion now use multiple cores. If so, to what extent does it use them? Is there any benefit to purchasing a 6 or 8 core CPU?

Hi seychellian

The majority of work is done on the graphics card, so number of cores (and threads) is not really relevant unless the CPU has low performance and is causing a bottleneck for the graphics card output.

The choice of 6 or 8 core is relevant to other applications that principally use the CPU.

Faster and higher performance CPU's, along with faster RAM and better performance motherboards will give the optimum when working with the graphics card.  So it's a combination of factors.  So if an 8 core helped a little bit more than a 6 core with overall performance, then that would be the better option.

Overall choosing the graphics card with the best performance for your budget and type of scenes will have greatest impact.
