QUESTION
How do you animate the construction process of a building?

ANSWER
There are several ways of doing that. Any combination of the three methods below is also possible.

Show Layer & Hide Layer effects
  • Import the various building components (slabs, columns, roof, walls, windows etc) as separate objects in Lumion.
  • Then use the Align function to make sure they all share the same position(Click here for more details).
  • Move the various building components to separate Layers (Click here for more details).
  • Use the Show Layer & Hide Layer effects to cycle through the phases of the contruction process:
Movie mode -> New effect -> Objects tab -> Show Layer
Movie mode -> New effect -> Objects tab -> Hide Layer
Skydrop, Move and Advanced Move effects
  • Import the various building components (slabs, columns, roof, walls, windows etc) as separate objects in Lumion.
  • Use the Align function to make sure they all share the same position (Click here for more details).
  • Then use the Sky drop, Move and/or Advanced Move effects to animate the phases of the contruction process, either in individual clips or with 'Entire Movie' selected (Click here for more details). A particularly effective method is to animate the Clip Plane in the Advanced Move effect.
Movie mode -> New effect -> Objects tab -> Move
Movie mode -> New effect -> Objects tab -> Advanced Move
Movie mode -> New effect -> Objects tab -> Sky drop
Build mode -> Objects -> Lights & Special Objects -> Clip Plane
Animate the construction process in a 3rd party application
    • Use 3DS Max to animate the individual components of the building (slabs, columns, roof, walls, windows etc) and export the scene to Lumion as an animated model (Click here for more details). This method is the most difficult of the three if you're not already familiar with 3DS Max but can yield some amazing results, especially if you use some of the construction animation plug-ins/scripts for 3DS Max.
