Hi All,

Another Tutorial for newbies, using the Basic Animation feature in Lumion.

Note:  There is no Part I. Part I got amalgamated into  2 & 3!

Hope it helps.

Hi blendman. Thanks for your tutorial. I managed to get people walking and I made the sun set in my Tahiti movie, but I haven't yet tried to make a door open! I think it's one I'll use a lot.

Thanks again. This will save me some mucking around!

Thanks blendman!.....I just wanted to second your warning about the axis and positioning of objects....It is always a good idea to check down the axis lines to see if you are straight and square.....look closely! in Sketchup you can be fooled..(or lazy :-[).
When a model is slightly off axis in any direction it can create a few mysteries for you in the build process. Sometimes you find out too late and it is difficult to repair.

Thanks Guys,

I put this together very quickly but assumed, like me, it will be used often!  When I did my Pacific Resort for the Lumion Design, I just did not have the skills, nor the time, to make doors opening (including sliding doors!), and decided I need to learn this.

Modelhead,

Your point is so valid here!!  and I tried to stress this in the video.  When I add the door handle, I pu the door in the wrong axis by accident, and had to re-record this sequence.

I have plan to do one or two more tutorials that I hope not just help me in learning this incredible software, but other as well.

Best wishes for the Season.

Many thanks for your kind, and encouraging comment.

I looked with interest at the opening door tutorial, by blendman, thanks for this tutorial. I also want to open doors and then walk through them with the camera in my animation. I had a lot of the same problems that blendman had in making this video:

1. No ability to quickly set an aerial view, or a frontal view for the camera, in order to correctly and quickly select the proper rotation point for the door.
2. If I don't plan ahead to make opening doors part of my animation then I might as well start over. Unfortunately this wastes a lot of time, depending on how many items are in my scene. I have no access to coordinate information that will replicate the same insert point of the model in the terrain.
3. Naturally the preferred method would be the ability to delete items from the model. Hence the deleted door gets replaced with a newly created door component which I'm then able to rotate.

Ferry has previously mentioned that they would like to investigate ways to automatically create door animations, for example based on proximity.

I recommend Ferry looks at AutoDesk Revit as a simple way of choosing element to be incorporated into the building.  The code is a another sorry!

Then there is the added difficulty of animating the opening of a typical 4 section garage door?
(brain hurty yet!)

I was going to do a animation of this but didn't bother.  I trhink the Lumion guys need to consider providing some basic animation templates for opening doord, rotating doors, and garage doors, it woulod be a nice feature to add to their plug-ins revenue.

I also don't think there is anything wrong with borrowing ideas from other programs, that have demonstrated methods, that make visualization work flow a better way forward for the user, such as the "gimbal" and the "3d cursor" for orientation and scaling.

This is a slightly tricky one. Your best bet is to animate this in 3DS Max, Maya, Blender or another application that lets you export animations in FBX format.

This is very interesting! The office I work for does not use any of those application, only Revit, SketchUp and Lumion. However it should be noted that SketchUp does have Dynamic Components which any user can make, provided you spend some time learning to fillout a component dialog box.

http://sketchup.google.com/product/dcs.html
for example; most if not all Kraftmaid kitchen cabinets, posted at the Google 3d warehouse, have dynamic components where the doors will swing open and drawers will pull out, provided you click on the item using the component icon in SketchUp. If its possible to use these dynamic components in Lumion, then one could create a sectional garage door in SketchUp, and then animate it by making it a Dynamic Component.  Would that also required FBX export from SketchUp ?
