Tip for everyone on workflow with updating design models

Hi all, generally we update our designs on a weekly basis from Sketchup to Collada to Lumion.  There does not seem to be a file linking system in place yet to link the Collada files to Lumion as they update, no problem, perhaps in a later build.  If I choose the same name when I update the collada file at model import, Lumion asks me for a unique name - but I actually want to replace this old version with a new version without having to re-position the actual file.  I'm sure some people would like to do the same. So...

I did find a useful work around that I wanted to share with everyone.  What I have been doing is this:

1.  Export your new revised object from Sketch Up as a Collada file, import new revised building into Lumion library with a new name.  I attach a date to the name for clarity.
2. Exit Lumion
3. Within the Lumion\Library folder, back up the old building object files - .txx, .inn and .lib file extensions.  These should have same name as old object.  These are the files Lumion was originally linking.

4. Rename the three NEW object files that you just imported with the OLD original name.  Lumion will load this object (thinking its the old object) which now contains your new updated information.

What this has been doing for me is letting me keep the exact same location of these object with a new revised version, which gets revised frequently.  The renaming doesn't take too long, but the re-placing of object every time it changed was too time consuming.

There is probably a better way than this but I thought i would share this method.  Let me know if there is a better way to link these Collada exports, thanks.

Thanks,

Vince

An easier way is to enter the edit materials mode.  From here you can use the "reload model" button to reload the model.  Just export the updated Sketchup model as a collada with the same file name as the original collada.  Lumion will update the model and retain placement and materials (as I recall, there may be an issue with Sketchup material assignments, but I'm not sure.)

If your intention is to keep a library of colladas for versioning reasons (I can't think of a reason you would want to do this), you can export the collada with a different name.  In Lumion, enter edit materials mode and hold the "alt" key while pressing the reload model button.  This will allow you to reload a model with a different name without having to make a unique name or modify filenames in the library folder.

Yes, indeed the reload function is (or would be - see some issues below) the solution. Watch this video below and at around 10:30 minutes, you can see the reload function:

Lumion Tutorial 4

At this moment, there are some issues with Collada files exported from SketchUp. Maybe best it is summarized here:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=40395

For the time being, there is a ("work in progress") plugin that is supposed to keep these material names:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=40397

but of course, the ultimate solution would be if Google changed the behaviour of its native exporter (let's hope it will happen).

Until then, SU Pro user can also use FBX as an export format (I have one this several times) since FBX will keep material names and references.

LOL!  Looks like I should at least read the FAQ page...  My mistake, simply "reloading" the model works like a charm!  Leave it to me to find the hardest way to do an easy task already built into the program.

That is the beauty of Lumion.
It is so simple that often you can't believe it.

Heh I'd like one of those t-shirts :)

Yes, Lumion 2 will have new features and hopefully bug fixes too, so stay tuned for Remko's preview later on.
