shadow range and shadow clipping

hello

we are testing lumion on a larger scene.
14 industrial buildings in a green environment.

we are doing some first test renderings and have some issues with shadows.

i cant get the shadow settings right, so could you please explain range and clipping to me ?

i attached three images for explaining my problem:

shadow_range_min
here the shadow is sharp but blurs out very fast
shadow_range_med
here the shadow is a little less sharp but blurs out not so fast
shodow_range_max
here the shadow is worse than in shadow_range_med ??
i expected this to be the best
 
isnt there the possibility to render sharp shadows as far as i can see ?
i remember an older post where you mentioned the shadow to be rendere sharp over every distance, or am i wrong ?

Realtime shadows use 3 levels of shadow which are divided over what you see. It is not possible to have 1 setting that is always good else we wouldn't have made a range slider.

Basically if you are high up in the aid a far range is good for long distances. But if you would go close to the landscape it would become less good. So to fix that you choose less range. In a clip you can animate the range of the shadow to match what you are seeing.

there is no option like best shadow resolution as far as i can see in the rendering.
not in the viewport.
as you can see on the examples i attached the bluring of the shadows is very unreal.

in an animation will there always be visible edges where the shadows start to blur ?

i thought i read in this forum a while ago that shadow rendering has been improved for long distances ..

We long ago changed the maximum range that is all.

is there room for improvement in the future, or is this a gpu limitation ?

For the realtime view it is hard to improve it without sacrificing speed. For non real time movie rendering we will probably be able to get it perfect in a future release.

realtime view is fine as it is,
glad to hear that for the final rendering shadow can be improved.

just rendering out a new animation of an industrial zone.
these shadows are making me mad ... sometimes when rotating the camera view shadows grow sharp and soft and sharp again. its a little bit unsatisfying ... as an architect i just dont like these blurred shadows..


any chance the final shadow quality/range could be improved in the near future
