Due to SketchUp originally being more stable on Nvidia hardware we have always stuck with Nvidia. We went via quadro's and now due to Lumion use the 580. I believe that 480 is fast enough but the 580 is the card of choice. The key thing to remember is to keep an eye on the drivers, always keep up to date but make notes on stability and roll back if you get problems with the latest version and stick to stable, not beta drivers. The other thing if you build or get a new machine keep the bios up to date too. I have just refreshed the drivers and bios on our republic of gamers machine and now have a very stable set up.
With that said the 590 is just two 580 on the same card, this makes it very expensive and still in fairly short supply and most definitely bleeding edge. You can run 2 x 580 in sli mode to get a 590 but of course you can put 2 x 590 if you have the cash.
From my experience the fastest most cost effective setup is the 580 with 1536mb and if you can run to it 3GB.
So for me its 580 and keep the cash as we haven't had a Lumion model that didn't fly with it. However, this week sees the biggest ever model we have worked on so I shall keep you posted it the 580 lets us down.
I also use Intel processors, so it would be good to here from an AMD ATI fan. Perhaps we could have a standard model to benchmark in Lumion?
I hope that is of use, let us know what you decide on.

I have used ATI for 21 years and last year I switched to NVIDIA due to unbearable driver problems. I am sure I will never use ATI again, do not even consider it.

My ATI 5850 works well with Lumion. Sure, it's not the fastest card out there, but on the plus side I don't experience any of the artifacts I've heard described by the Nvidia crowd here in the forum :)

What sort of problems/glitches/artifacts were you having with your ATI card(s), byzantium?

I have tested Lumion with my ATI 6870 and did not see any problems. However ATI does not work with several high-end production tools.
