Hello,

I thing it's a good idea to share our config PC and our render time to see what's the best hardware for lumion... It could help new users to improve their hardware in the best way... I'm also curious to see the result of dual graphic cards...

----------------------------------------------

Version: lumion 32 bits sp2
System: Win7 64bits
Ram: 12Go ram
Processor: Xeon w3990 (6 cores)
Graphic card: 1 x nvidia geforce GTX 580 1,5Go

Render time frame rate
Type of project: big scene with +/- 250 trees
Options: all settings max in lumion
1080p : +/- 12fps (5min = 26hours)
720p : +/- 7fps (5min = 11hours)

Nice idea but to get somewhat unbiased results you need a Lumion certified benchmark 1st.
I can make a small testlevel for that and drop it in here but 1st I'd like to know what the position of the devs is on this.

Perhaps rendering one of the Example Scenes would be the best Idea, being that everyone has the same scene in which to test.

I'll make a benchmark scene and upload it here so we can beta-test it and see if something is missing etc.
Perhaps it can then be included in the next update as a demoscene.
This a plan?

Thanks mate.

I forsee I'm gonna suffer GPU envy with this test.  |:(

The scene should be common to Lumion basic users and not contain any extra effects.  Morten included the alpine dwelling scene in the SP2 examples.  It even contains movie clips.  Since everyone has it, and it doesn't contain plugins, why don't we just use it?  Leave all settings "as-is" and press render.

Could be a start for sure. Interesting house, nice mountains.
That however still doesn't give you a proper benchmark :(
You'd probably like to know how your rig compares to peers when handling lots of vertexes, textures, animations, objects,  effects and overdraw.
Ie, you want to make sure the GPU especially, gets put through all the things which makes Lumion great on
a average pc and awesome on a ninja-machine :-)
Takes a bit of time to set that up. Not much but can't do it overnight  :D

Definitely a good idea.  Looking forward to what you come up with Aaron.  Having built my own rig, I'd be interested in seeing where I score.

I think cpercers idea is fun too.  Honesty is key.
Doesn't take long on my old commodore 32-bit.

Parameters and Scene
Alpine Retreat
Scene 1
Saved as HD 1280x720 MP4
Rendered as is

Software Estimated time at beginning of movie creation: 26 min 1 sec
Actual Time to complete movie creation: 34 min

Computer Basic Vitals

XP 32 Bit
2 Gig Ram
GTX 460 1gig
Dual Xeon Processors 3.0GHz (8 CPUs)
7200RPM Raid

Following CRhoades format:

Parameters and Scene
Alpine Retreat
Scene 1
Saved as HD 1280 x 720 MP4
Rendered as is

Desktop:
Software estimated time at beginning of movie creation: 13 min 49 sec
Actual time to complete movie creation: 17 min

Edit: As an experiment, I rendered to an image sequence to compare to the MP4 output of Lumion.  Images were saved as .BMP:

Software estimated time at beginning of image sequence creation:  15 min 50 sec
Actual time to complete image sequence creation:  18 min

*Note - The end result of MP4 vs. BMP Image Sequence was that the MP4 was of a visibly higher quality.  There were some artifacts present in the BMP.

Laptop:
Software estimated time at beginning of movie creation: 22 min 9 sec
Actual time to complete movie creation: 27 min

Computer Basic Vitals

Desktop:
Custom Build
Lumion SP2 64 bit
Win 7 64 bit
GTX 580 1.5g
I7-960 (4 core)
12 gig RAM
Intel X-25 SSD

Laptop
Clevo X-7200
Lumion SP2 64 bit
Win 7 64 bit
GTX 485M 2g
I7-970 (6 core)
12 gig RAM
Seagate 500g Momentus 7200 (waiting on replacement OCZ SSD)

I would be interested to know how much the other hardware besides the GPU affects render time.  Is there really that much difference between the GTX460 and the 580?

Since Lumion doesn't take advantage of SLI configurations of GPUs, we will be limited by the power of a single card until that barrier is removed.

I am running:

Intel I7 cpu
ATI Radeon HD5770 1g
Windows 7 64 bit
Lumion sp2 32 bit

The scene took about 32 minutes to render.

I will install the 64 bit upgrade and post the different results.

With Google you will find that a SLI of 460 cost less than a 580 for almost same performance ...
But you need sli motherbord ... Ps total memory for sli is the memory of only one card...

Bye

It was my impression that Lumion could not use dual GPUs in SLI.  Is this limited to GPU RAM or the processor or both?
