Hi all,

I searched arround and couldn't find the answer here on the forum.

I am trying to put a ("captain") man behind the wheel on a moving boat. (it's strange to see a moving boat with no one behind the wheel  :-D)

The boat and his captain I can animate in the movie section (animate objects).
I give the boat a start and end position. I give the captain the same start and end position as the boat.
Only the boat goes much faster than the captain. So in the movie the captain floats very slowly behind the boat.

Does anybody has a solution for this? Can I give the captain the same moving speed as the boat?.

No, it is not yet possible to group objects in Lumion. We are aware of this limitation though.

Put a captain on a boat in the modeling software you are using (ketchup or other) and import that into Lumion.

Animate the boat and you have a captain on a moving boat.   :D

I tried to do this as many ways as you could imagine. My experience is exactly the same as yours.

I discovered the answer by first working out that both an idle man and an animated walking man move at the same speed.

So I figured out how many frames i needed to get a walking man to cross the screen. Then added the boat and the idle man in the boat and made their start and end positions the same as the walking man they both move together. Of course you can then remove the walking man.

The downside is that the animation speed is that of walking, so no fast motor boat or whatever.

However there are cheats for this, one is to put the view point at the opposite end to the start position and at right angles to the line of travel of the boat and then move the viewpoint in a dolly and retake the frames so the action appears to cross the sight line faster. You can also use the depth of field to do a zoom between captured frames to make it appear that the boat is approaching faster.

btw. I also tried putting the boat and the idle man on different layers but it is still a problem.

So if Arthur is reading this it would simply be a matter of untying the idle man objects calculated speed thru worldspace. So that the idle action is constrained to the same time frame as the walking action  but the figures motion through space is not.

A better way of course would be options for figures so they have a motion speed through space slider, as well as a walk to run speed slider. Of course a few driving models would also be nice.
Doing this would allow one to add walking people into buses and trains and boats while they are moving. You could also have some people in a crowd move faster than others etc.

While on the subject an option to change clothing coloring wouldnt be bad either.

Here's a link to footage that shows the result of the above without using a cheat. Note the work requires a lot of trial and error  (about two hours) you have to line every thing up. Even then you will note the man moves backwards slightly as boat passes.

 :D Of course you cant do anything about the randomness of the gull flying through the window. Also have to  watch camer angles and depth of boat as ocean goes through the bottom of the boat.

 NB footage is AVI Xvid 640 x 360 I added the audio in post just for ambience.
