Sounds like a nice idea. I think many people want to have some sort of orbit camera.

In my applications I always give walkthrough, fly and orbit cameras (and sometimes top view).
When switching to orbit mode the cursor is replaced by a viewfinder waiting for user to point a surface that will become a center (target) for orbit camera. After pointing any surface the viewfinder changes back to cursor and we can turn around this point using rightclick or keyboard arrows. The orbit mode is active untill any of WSAD keys are pressed which switch  from orbit mode back to fly mode. Then again when turning to orbit mode I have to point something to make it the target for orbit camera. It could be also done by ALT + leftclick and by selecting whole object not a specific point.
Anyway, orbit camera would be usefull as well for work as for animating camera move around an object.
