Lumion 2 slow render

Finally upgraded to Lumion 2.
Is it typical for renders to slow to a crawl after peppering a model with interior lighting?

I have two interior sequences that took about 4-5 hours per scene to render (10 hrs total).  I noticed when I started the rendering last night that Lumion 2 was registering almost no CPU action and using about 4gb of ram (I have 12)...so I left it running all night and this morning it looked as if it hadn't rendered but a few frames and said that there was about 138 hours remaining...deadline is tomorrow D'oH!

Is there something that I am doing wrong, or could it be that adding lights exponentially adds to render time?

After lunch I was going to try on a different machine (with same specs) and until then I am going to try a still render to see how long that takes.

Machine specs:
Video Card - ATI FirePro V8700 (FireGL) 1GB

Basically looks like while rendering I get 1% CPU usage with constant "Not Responding" and using 2gb ram.  I just have a white screen with Lumion 2 as a header.

Keeps white screening and "not responding" when going to attempt video again.

The still took 6 minutes for the lowest resolution, but was white screen the entire time.

I just found this thread http://lumion3d.com/forum/general-discussion/render-times/msg23523 and changed all 90 lights to 512k to see if that changes anything.

At least I finally see a render screen...says 22.66 seconds/frame so far...

The graphics card you're using just about meets the minimum requirement for Lumion, so you would experience shorter render times if upgrading was an option:

http://lumion3d.com/forum/f-a-q/lumion-2-minimum-hardware-requirements/

About IES lights with dynamic shadows
Every time you add a light with real-time shadows (i.e. Shadow Cache -> off instead of 128/256/512), the scene needs to be rendered once more, so the exponential render times you are experiencing are not surprising.

If you turn on FPS in Settings and press F8 + F9 while the entire scene is visible inside the viewport, you will be able to see how many vertices (3 vertices per triangle in a polygon) that Lumion needs to render for each frame. Notice how this value rises each time you add a light with dynamic shadows to the scene.

However, if you change the Shadow Cache to one of the 3 resolutions (128/256/512), it means that the vertex count will drop dramatically. In other words, the graphics card has to render the scene fewer times per frame at the expense of a higher memory usage. This will almost always result in shorter render times.

Thanks, that's what I found by looking at that thread.
The explanation helps a lot though.  I'll definitely have to give the bump to the suggestions that the default for lights not be "off".

Funny thing about this video card...it is really expensive (though it is 3 years old now)!  LOL - I'll have to search for a thread that shows the best card out there for Lumion and see if I can get some cash from the boss in a month or so.

Thanks again Morten!

Hello "daddy"  :D
You may use the website given by our friend Morten for choosing your card....
Price depend of your country of course ...
-Forget sli and bi-GPU...
-Big memory 2go or more -> Big project and big texture...
I have a 580 3go and I'm very happy...
That's all folks  :-D

(Before you order a new graphics card, always ask the manufacturer of your PC if the card is compatible and if you will need a new power supply)
