lock computer during render

I am new to Lumion and so far it is far exceeding my expectiations.  Congrats on a great product aimed at Arch/Eng/Planning viz.

I tried exporting my first movie last night but when I locked my station down for the evening it seemed to stop rendering.  When I came in this morning the rendering was in the same place I left it.  I read in the FAQ that you cannot render in the background.  However my computer will automatically lock down after inactivity.  Is there any way to let Lumion render while the computer is locked?

Thanks!

Gaieus mentioned that if you make Windows Media Player play looping music/videos in the background, Windows thinks that you're still using the computer.

It's a slightly odd workaround, but apparently it works.

there is a better solution for this, Control Panel> Power Options ..

customize it so that Windows
"Never" Shuts down the screen
"Never" Shuts down the hard disk
"Never" Put the PC on standby/shutdown/hibernate
"Never" log-off

my PC is rendering for over 24 hours now non-stop with these settings.

Yes, unless the sys admin won't let you change those settings.

I've seen a couple of those cases in companies with strict IT policies, so people tend to let WMP run in the background instead. It's obviously a waste of CPU cycles but hey... :)

yeah our IT is as strict too, but with internet bandwidth and access :D I almost begged them to let me access this forum :D !

but when it comes to electricity/power etc ... they don't care, at least here :P

He. My boss (myself)  is the most liberal about what I can do and what not.

BTW I may (also) have mentioned that media player but then I must have heard from someone else.

Anyway, my machine never goes to sleep or in any other way inactivity, I know it's the worst for overnight rendering. Also watch for automated Windows updates (and the resulting, automated reboot).

Very good point!

there's also another issue that pained me, we use the application  "LogMeIn" to access our workstations remotely from home or on the go.

however LogMeIn installs a new fake video adapter in your PC Drivers to enable it to record and send live feed (remote control) of your remote PC.

Sadly though if you try to remote control a PC that is rendering in Lumion, your renders will either stop or get totally corrupted, so don't try it.

Alternative is if you have the PRO version or another application that has Remote File Manager, you can check the frames saved and rendered (if you render frame by frame which i think is the best & safest option) to check lumion's progress.

Thanks for the everyones input and advice.  The media player idea sounds like it will work.  Unfortunately the Power Options idea will not work in my case since the IT policy restricts it.  I do wish that Lumion would render in the background so I can work without it stopping.  I wear so many hats here that I cant really stop working during the rendering time.

Has anyone tried setting up a render-farm workflow for Lumion?

Thanks again to all for the responses.

While developing Lumion they tested this, but unfortunately Windows became very unresponsive while Lumion was rendering in the background. So unresponsive that you could hardly do anything, so out of necessity rendering currently only occurs while the Lumion window is active.

Thanks Morten,

I realized that when reading the FAQs.

Our 3d viz team is currently testing Lumion for potentially recommending it to the firm for purchase.  However, we are hoping there is a way to setup some kind of workaround where we can send the render jobs to one or several computers to render.  This would allow us to work on our other graphics without having to stop productivity.

We thought that we could VNC over to another server machine may work but its just a theory at this point.  Have your development team tested any of these scenarios?

Thanks again for all your help and continuous efforts to make Lumion such a success.

It is currently not possible to send render jobs to another PC via the interface in Lumion, so you'd have to do this the old-fashioned way, ie, by copying the Scene and Library files from PC A to PC B, loading the scene on PC B and starting the rendering procedure. Note that you'd need 2 Lumion licenses, otherwise you'd have to de-activate the license on PC A before activating it on PC B.

The Scenes and Library folders are currently hard-coded to the C: drive:
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Lumion 2\Scenes & Library

As a workaround, some of our customers who are using Lumion on multiple PCs within a local area network have installed network sync software to ensure that the latest Lumion scenes/library files are used on all PCs:
http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=861.msg5032#msg5032

However, Lumion does not automatically detect scene/library files that have been updated via the network, so you would have to restart Lumion and reload the scene after updating the scene/library files.

Really.. you can render in the background... I guess that will teach me to read more before I buy something...  That is a real pain....  Hopefully the team can get that worked out... so far I love the product, but that is really a deal changer for me....  please let us know if anything changes on
this front....

Thanks!!
