ideas and suggestions...

hello,
after working with lumion for 4 days, some important suggestions came to my mind...:
(sorry for my unperfect english)

1. materials

-function: save colour-set of a model (absolutely necessary)
-function: load saved colour-set to another model / colours, witch fit, are defined, other ignored

result: splitting a big model in sketchup into parts,  loading as models, in every particular model then the same LUMION COLOUR / MATERIAL for the imported colour. saves much time

-function plus: all this per copy & paste (select model / copy colours(/materials // select another / paste)

2. rendering:

"PAUSE"-function for a video-rendering. you could render a part / PAUSE (close and shut down the pc) and start on the "STOP" - position later and finish the video. would be great for longer moovies.

3. render from / to time-stamp
please inklude locators start / stop, so that one could render only a part of a longer video-compilation (one set in each video / one set in the "entire video"

result: smaller files from one video file , where the surroundings (clouds, sun etc) are globaly calculated. by this you can compile the part-videos in a video-postproduction much better

4. just for safety:
you can stop rendering by pressing "ESC" at the moment. please implement a confirmation-dialog, it's safer against books and other things, which like to fall on the keyboard....

5. mirror-function on the ocean surface:

i don't know, if this is a bug or my pc is wrong ( hitec-pc, saphire 3gb ram graphics) , but i have mirrorded houses etc. on the horizon, far away from the model (see>> picture)

6. moving horizontal / vertical : a bug?

when i adjust the hight of for ex. stones and the move them again in x/y , the hight adjustmen gets lost.....

and: please implement shift + left mouse for much quicker movement in the vertical (z) direction in editing position

7. ocean-surface:
can it be, that the ocean behaves different at the lumion-element-surfaces then on imported skp-surfaces?

8.designing a video:
plaese insert a button, which copies all settings (sun, water, clouds etc) from the actual editor-window to the first video frame. by that you could start the video at the position and whith the feeling, which inspires at the moment.
and vice-versa: when i am in a video and see a mistake, i would like to stop the video-performance and say: "go to editor at exactly this perspective / view). this would save MUCH TIME

and : the inspiration in the editor is saved over to a video at this very special moment.....

9. video-edit (record) :
please make the markers "movable", separately for each effect. i know, while moving, we'd have to decide , which effect should be moved. but this could be solved by a small checklist on each marker, where you can deside: move / copy / nothing per effect.

10. editing:

when for example placing birds , it would be useful to fix the x/y-axis (by pressing ALT or something) to be able then to controll the hight only (whith shift !!!!, see before)

the same for imported models...

11. Z-offset

a z-offset for an element would be usefull, so you could controll the placement in slopes much better

12.

idea: automatic rotation of trees / stones etc (like colours on cars) and a random factor for the "strech"-function.
by that trees would be rotated and smaller / bigger (just a bit) automatically.
for trees also a random angle in both directions...

13.very important:
when moving object, a small POINT appears at one edge of the object , where you select the function.

i insert big part of cities like one object and sometimes the controll-point is not visible or hard to find , where i have to edit.
so: please insert these controll-points on every corner and surface of the "virtual cubus" ore make it "moveable" by pressing a key (means: appearing step by step on every corner, until it's near to the visible part (visible on screen)

14. terraforming:
could you implement a rectangle and free form (polygon) for terraforming , too???

result: placing objects / drawing a line around them in free shape, terraform up and down...

and there is a hole in the ground or a form on it (slope adjustable 0- 90°)

this would make the connection between terrain and models much easier

15: object-replace

importing for ex. a long row of trees , created in sketchup

new function in limion : replace all objects "x" by object "y", again with randomized angle and other parameters, adjustable

16. . position lock

should not fix the object for advanced animation, only in the editor

17. peridiocal movement - "controller-point"
could you implement a "controll-point" , which can move within adjustable borders (+/- x // +/- y // +/- z) with a definable period ot time periodically?

result: connection such a point to a boat with +/- 30 cm at x and z would let it move on the waves . inserting a second point with y-movement makes the movemt 3d...

that's it for now.
please tell me, if such ideas are interesting for you at all, if so, i'll keep on writing them down, otherwise.....

regard and thanx for the great software

stan

This is already possible with the latest build - now I am not sure if in every Lumion version or just Pro?

Not only books but cats. I have three of them and they are much more active than books. :D

I was once rendering on my desktop and in the meanwhile had my laptop on the desk, too, to work on it in the meanwhile and incidentally pressed the Esc key on the desktop keyboard. You can imagine the swear words I was screaming.

Those control points are always the model origin of your exported SU model. As you cannot have more than one origin in SU, (I guess) you cannot have more than one insertion/control point in Lumion either (Lumion probably handles something that we would call a "bounding box" in SU differently so those virtual corners may not be easy to identify).

Anyway, if you have several of these control points overlapping, use your mouse scroll wheel to go through them to pick what you want to select.

hi gaieus,
well, training cats and dogs will probably have the same effect as training my books, so hopefully the lumions will help....

the colour-sets: well, i have the "biggest"-version, 2.2, so i'll have to look for that function. just few minutes ago a found a list of shortcuts in the forum, there are some really usefull ones, but nothing about saving colours. we will see....

finally: the box
well , i know, that the controll-point is "imported". anyway, lumion could draw a virtual box around the whole object, calculate the offset to the origin and let us move this box with the model in it. for my opinion a simple solution, easy to programm.

it is nearly impossible to place a model exactly, when you do not focus the controll point. but when placing models, sometimes the relavant parts are at the opposit side of the model.

i will check out , how the axis-system in sketchup is reflected in lumion, maybe preparing it for import can solve the problem partly (means : putting sketchup axis to relevant positions and then export to collada)....

regards stan

ps_ what about the mirrored buildings at the horizon (>> picture). any idea?

The SU collada export will always use the original world axes 8and origin) when exporting so changing the axes on the fly will not take effect (those are just called "work axes" and are always temporary).

There are a bunch of things that do not take changed axes into account: just think of the standard views.

Hi Stan, thanks for your suggestions.

5. mirror-function on the ocean surface:

i don't know, if this is a bug or my pc is wrong ( hitec-pc, saphire 3gb ram graphics) , but i have mirrorded houses etc. on the horizon, far away from the model (see>> picture)

It's not a bug but a known limitation of the current feature set in Lumion. Since current PC hardware is not fast enough to calculate raytraced reflections for all reflective materials in real-time, there are just 2 options for real-time 3D engines:

1) Planar reflections: This is perfect for mirrors. The downside is that the render engine basically has to render everything that is reflected a second time (mirrored), and depending on the scene complexity this can drastically reduce performance. This is the reason you typically only see planar reflections in small scenes in real-time 3D graphics. And before you ask: This feature is not available in Lumion :) But the developers are aware of the issues caused by its absence.

2) Cubemap reflections: Also known as "faking it" :) What you are seeing on the water in your scene is a 360 degree panoramic reflection texture which is rendered from a single point in the scene (this point is set by adding the Lights/Utilities/Reflection Control object to your scene).

If you haven't added the Lights -> Utilities -> Reflection Control object to your scene, it will be placed high above the terrain in a default position.

This 360 degree panoramic reflection texture is then projected onto all reflective materials in your scene, including the water on your rendering.

The downside is that it is a rough approximation, and you will never be able to achieve perfect reflections with this method, but it's all we've got in Lumion for the time being. In your situation, the best position for this Reflection Control object is at the camera position, but even then, the reflections will not be correct. All you can do is to learn to live with this limitation.

6. moving horizontal / vertical : a bug?

when i adjust the hight of for ex. stones and the move them again in x/y , the hight adjustmen gets lost.....

Press Shift while moving models horizontally to turn off snapping. There are more tip, tricks and shortcuts in this thread:
http://lumion3d.com/forum/f-a-q/lumion-2-tips-tricks-and-shortcuts/

7. ocean-surface:
can it be, that the ocean behaves different at the lumion-element-surfaces then on imported skp-surfaces?

There is a difference between the Water material that you can assign to imported models, and the 'native' water planes in Lumion. Use the Water material for more control over the way the water looks.

12. idea: automatic rotation of trees / stones etc (like colours on cars) and a random factor for the "strech"-function.
by that trees would be rotated and smaller / bigger (just a bit) automatically.
for trees also a random angle in both directions...

There are already a few different ways of randomising the position, rotation and scale of trees (and other models):
http://lumion3d.com/forum/f-a-q/lumion-2-tips-tricks-and-shortcuts/

You should also check out the Context Menu option (Randomize function).

However, it is not possible to change the pitch/bank values of trees.

hello and thanx for all the information (i work on lumion for nearly a week now, so i am still inventing and learning).

maybe you can think of improving the mirror function only for the final renderer in the best quality for the future (no matter how it looks in realtime 3d). that would be great.

thank you very much!

Yes, if they do implement planar reflections at some point, a 'final-render-only' option might be best.
