You can't import skinning directly. You will have to wait untill we finish more advanced user imported models in future versions. You can import non skinned animation of course. But for humans that doesn't work well.

hopefully the upcoming version can import components, such as RPC from 3DMax

RPC's are billboards correct? You can import a square and use the billboard material.

RPC objects are not supported natively in Lumion, so you will have to convert a single texture to a billboard in Lumion. I'm not sure if it's possible to extract a single texture with a diffuse + alpha channel from an RPC object, but here's the procedure if you do have access to such a texture:

1) Create a plane that faces the front view in 3DS Max.
2) Apply a Standard material to the plane.
3) Add a texture with a diffuse and an alpha channel to the diffuse map channel (32-bit TGA/PNG/TIFF).
4) Export the plane to Lumion (preferably using the free OpenCollada exporter):
http://www.opencollada.org/download.html
5) After importing it, place it in your scene.
6) Import mode -> Edit materials -> Click on the small circular selection icon of the imported plane -> Click on the (+) button to add a new material -> Click on the plane -> Custom -> Choose Billboard
