Can I paste in a image like a MAP of the surrounding area?

So I did my first flyby of a large Middle and High School with and all exterior playing fields and I'm wondering we had a couple comments at the public forum that it looked like a desert cause the surrounding forests and roads and houses are not shown was hard to follow the movie.  So I'm asking the question can I download a 2D MAP jpg of about 10 or 15 acres to show the forest and peoples houses at are close to my project address?  Make some material of it or something?

Thanks
Billy

Hi Billy, as you've just found out, the context of a site is very important in public hearings :)

Do you need to insert a terrain mesh with a satellite image?

You can't assign a satellite image to the Lumion terrain.

But if you already have the satellite image, can't you create a plane that matches the real-world size of the image, and import this in Lumion?

Or is the terrain not planar?

Thanks I was thinking of making a HUGE plane and apply that image as a material but was hoping for some thing like a Billboard forest....lol

Thanks

Ah I see what you mean - automatically created forests based on satellite images are not possible in Lumion.

Depending on the size...this is a quick fix... http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=2802.0

Hi Billy,

You and I are looking for a similar kind of solution. Here is what I have found out works so far. Capture your site using sketchup 6 or 7 by downloading your site using your current location in google earth. Save a color image in google earth which you will use to replace the black and white image captured by sketchup. Export your site as 3ds file, import into lumion. Edit the site image material by replacing with the colored one. You now have a site that represents the context of your project. Note; I have recommended the use of sketchup 6.0 or 7.0 and not 8.0 as 8.0 zero does not import good quality site image. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Alickn

I will have to try this out! My site is steep and not very flat but worth a try plus I have many of projects that are not as steep that I can put this into so thanks very much!

I do not like Sketchup Sam-I-am I do not like Sketchup or green eggs and ham!

Short solution:

Make an object of the surroundings with your satellite image on the ground. If you used very big satellite images you can go to the material editior of the object, press ctrl and hit the reload button. Your model will be reloaded but this time the textures will be loaded in the maximum size for your GPU. On some GPUs this is 16000x16000 pixels!

It turns out that (CTRL) + (Reload) is only needed if Low Mem mode is enabled in the Settings menu. If Low Mem mode isn't enabled, you can load textures of whatever size your graphics card is capable of showing.

However, Low mem mode is a little buggy at the moment:

Low mem mode on: Import model/apply texture to Standard/Lightmap material
512x512: Loaded at the correct resolution.
1024x1024: Loaded at the correct resolution.
2048x2048: Capped at 512x512 and CTRL + Reload model doesn't override the cap.
4096x4096: Capped at 512x512 and CTRL + Reload model doesn't override the cap.

It doesn't make sense that you can load a 1024x1024 texture without problems, but higher resolution textures are capped at 512x512, so I added these issues to the bug tracker list some days ago.
