saving and opening file in Lumion

I have very basic  question. I am able to open up a new sketchup file in Lumion, and make changes to the model. How do I save it in a folder of my choice and how do I open the existing file later? I think I found the file in a Lumion folder but it is not opening with Lumion? It seems very basic but I cant find any tutorial on line. Thanks. I see the file I worked on under C:\Users\______\Documents\Lumion 4\Scenes and found the other one under C:\Users\-----\Documents\Lumion 4\Library.

I listened to the Importing Projects From A File (00:29) tutorial. But in the tutorial the screen has 7 options and mine has 5 options. when I click on the import full scene, I cant find the file I worked on and saved previously. But I can see it under load scene. The problem is I did a lot of exercises yesterday and when I tried to open en existing file it wasn't under load scene anymore. Again, how to open up an existing Lumion file?   Please see attachment.

Hi bcafer

.. I am able to open up a new sketchup file in Lumion, and make changes to the model. How do I save it in a folder of my choice and how do I open the existing file later?

All files for each imported model are saved by default in the My Documents\Lumion 4\Library folder.  Currently there is no option to allow users to save elsewhere.  Every time you make a change to an import model in Edit Materials and click on the Tick button, Lumion will update and save the required files.  There are four files associated with each model (see LUMION 4: Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts ).

Once an imported model is saved in Lumion you then access that model from the Imported Objects Library to place in a scene.  Once placed in a scene, and the scene is saved, then the model is available to that scene.  You do not need to open it.  It will be there and available for you to edit as part of the scene.

Note: an imported model is treated as a sort of master object.  You can place it in many different scenes.  If you make changes to the model in any of the scenes, that change will be there in all the other scenes opened.

..I think I found the file in a Lumion folder but it is not opening with Lumion? It seems very basic but I cant find any tutorial on line. Thanks. I see the file I worked on under C:\Users\______\Documents\Lumion 4\Scenes and found the other one under C:\Users\-----\Documents\Lumion 4\Library.

Scene files are stored in My Documents\Lumion 4\Scenes folder (see LUMION 4: Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts).

You access/open a scene by using the Lumion interface Files --> Load Scene and click on the scene (project) thumbnail to load the scene.

You may be used to something like a Windows menu of File --> Open --> locate folder where last saved project --> locate file for project --> click on Open/Load button to finally load the scene  :-D.

In Lumion you just click on the thumbnail.  Lumion remembers where the scene is (always in \My Documents), and everything that is needed for that scene - scene data and the import models or Lumion Library Objects (entourage).

See further as reply in second post.

Hi again

I see and have answered your other topic about differences between Scenes and Import/Export Full Scenes.  For the meantime, you can ignore features on Importing/Exporting Full Scenes.

Learning resources:
1.  as a key reference: LUMION 4: Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts.

2.  Video Tutorials:
[dot]  watch at least a few times (I still do  ;) ) the main Lumion overview video: Get To Know Lumion In 8 Minutes.
[dot]  the rest as you build your skills and knowledge.  :)

.. But I can see it under load scene. The problem is I did a lot of exercises yesterday and when I tried to open en existing file it wasn't under load scene anymore. Again, how to open up an existing Lumion file?   Please see attachment.

If the exercises were working on an imported model, then (as earlier post reply) those changes will be part of the model.

You need to save scenes so that they are available in the Load Scene thumbnails list(see pic 1).  You do that by clicking on the Save Scene Tab and entering a name for the scene, then clicking on the Tick button.

From time to time (depending on how many changes are being done) you should also make new versions of the scene.  You do that by a saveAs, entering a different name (such as projectxYZ_update2).  Both versions are then available to load as needed.

There are also some special backup files created automatically by Lumion so that if a user closes and does not save, then they can recover from the AutoSave or AutoSaveOnQuit thumbnails.

Once saved, you can open it from the Load Scene Tab (pic 2).

The problem with this system of saving files is that if like me, you work on many projects, you want to save all files I a particular location. what if you use a network with programs going to one drive, and working files going to a different location? any suggestions?

Hi williamaguilar

There is the option to get Windows to re-direct your \My Documents, see topic: WHERE ARE MY LUMION SCENES AND IMPORTED MODELS SAVED? in LUMION 5: Frequently asked questions.

Source model files created using Revit, SketchUp etc can be saved elsewhere.  Lumion will store the complete path and so long as the network drive is available, you can do things like Reload.

For Pro users, LS4/LS5 Exported scenes can be saved to any location.

Indeed, the idea of being able to save scene and imported object files elsewhere than the default has been mentioned by other users.  You are welcome to add a suggestion to the Wishlist Boards on it.
